Sun and the Earth. When this happens, the Moon stops sunlight from reaching
Earth.

What is meant by umbra and penumbra?
The Moon casts two shadows on

1.
The total Solar Eclipse:
A total solar eclipse may be seen from a tiny part of the Earth.
Those who see the total eclipse are in the center of it when the Moon's shadow
strikes Earth. The sky extremely darkens as if it were night.
2.
The Partial Solar Eclipse:
The partial solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are
not perfectly aligned. A black shadow emerges on a small portion of the Sun's
surface.
3.
The Annular Solar Eclipse:
This type of solar eclipse occurs when the moon is so far away from the earth's surface, the moon looks smaller because it is farther away. It does not completely occupy or stop or unclear the Sun's view. When the Moon is in front of the Sun, it appears as a black disc on top of a bigger Sun-colored disc. This seems to form a ring around the Moon.
